SEN. FINNEY PRAISES BREDESEN FOR WEST TENN. MEGASITE FUNDING
$27 million in governor's budget to acquire land, rights of way for West Tennessee site

NASHVILLE - The budget presented Monday night by Gov. Phil Bredesen contains $27 million for a "megasite" to draw a major business facility - and the jobs that come with it - to West Tennessee, Sen. Lowe Finney, D-Jackson, said.

"I am pleased to see this big boost for West Tennessee," Finney said. "I have been fighting for this for two years.

"Rural counties across the state are looking for ways to attract industries that will bring good-paying jobs and stability to their declining economies.

"Megasites have drawn Volkswagen to the Chattanooga area and the Hemlock Semiconductor plant to Clarksville. This brings it closer to reality in rural West Tennessee.

The funding is to purchase land and rights of way on property in Haywood County. It was part of the $29.3 billion budget for fiscal 2010 presented Monday night to a joint session of the state House and Senate.

"Like families and business owners across Tennessee, the governor and the General Assembly are making difficult choices as they deal with a tight budget," Sen. Finney said.

"But, this budget spares schools from the deeper cuts that we had feared. And it looks ahead, beyond the current economy, to lay groundwork for a stronger financial future in Tennessee."
