SEN. LOWE FINNEY APPLAUDS ANNOUNCEMENT OF BRIDGE REPAIRS IN CARROLL, GIBSON COUNTIES

NASHVILLE - State Senator Lowe Finney praised Governor Phil Bredesen's announcement that the state will replace rural bridges in Carroll and Gibson counties with the first wave of state economic recovery funding. Sen. Finney had previously met with Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely in 2007 and 2008 in support of these bridge projects.

The Governor announced that among its first wave of infrastructure developments, the department will replace two sets of bridges in the 27th District:
-Westport Road bridges over the Big Sandy River in Carroll County
-McMurry Road bridges over Davis Creek, Reagan Creek and other branches in Gibson County

"These bridge replacements are crucial to our economic development in West Tennessee," Sen. Finney said. "Not only will these projects employ workers right away, but they will also make our roads safer for farmers, school buses, and neighbors and help our area as we continue in our efforts to recruit new jobs."

Sen. Finney supported 27th District rural road construction projects in a Feb. 25 letter to Commissioner Nicely following Nicely's testimony to the Senate Transportation Committee, on which Finney serves.

"Your department has recognized that there are approximately 30 structurally deficient bridges in the state," Sen. Finney wrote in his letter. "I wanted to express my continued support and thank you for addressing the needs of these counties for their bridges and 'off-system' roads." Each county will save an estimated $150,000-$400,000 as a result of the economic recovery funding.

Sen. Lowe Finney represents the 27th Senatorial District in Carroll, Gibson and Madison counties. Sen. Finney is Vice-Chair of the Senate State and Local Government Committee and also serves on the Senate Transportation Committee and the Joint Committee on Long-Term Care Oversight.
