Governor Bredesen Announces Enhancement Grant for City of Milan

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely joined state and local leaders today to announce the award of a $635,123 transportation enhancement grant to the City of Milan for Phase I of the Downtown Revitalization project.

The project is located along Main Street from Southwest Front Street to Church Street. It will add new sidewalks, decorative concrete pavers, and landscaping. The project will also add new amenities such as benches, bicycle racks, signage, and pedestrian lighting. This project phase will be the first to implement recommendations from the new Milan Downtown Master Plan.

“Revitalization projects like this enhance the lives of citizens and promote economic growth in our towns and cities,” said Bredesen. “I am pleased the state of Tennessee can help implement this new vision for Downtown Milan.”

“City leaders and local businesses are dedicated to the economic development of downtown, and this grant can help further those efforts,” said Senator Lowe Finney. “I thank Governor Bredesen and TDOT for supporting this project.”

Representative Curtis Halford also supported the project.

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through Transportation Enhancement grants, TDOT has funded approximately $223 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” said Nicely. “Established by Congress in the early 1990’s, the program supports activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.”

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.
